Third stop: Golden Fleece – the most haunted bar in England We spent longer than we expected in the museum, so it was about quarter pass 2 that we came out from it... got to have lunch!
Taking a friend’s recommendation, we went to the most haunted bar in England: The Golden Fleece. It did look mysterious from the outside (with a golden sheep hanging up there…). The building structure (the famous skeleton by the bar, slanted staircase, wobbly table and shabby chairs) also added on to the overall eerie atmosphere… Nevertheless, I was probably too hungry to be frightened by possible ghosts… Here comes the part where I deducted marks for this bar: it took forever for the food to be served! Especially when we were only there for a day...every minute was valuable! It was about 2:40 when we arrived to the haunted pub, about 2:50 when we finished ordering, and about 3:45 when we actually got the food. We ordered the Golden Fleece burger with blue cheese, the famous British dish fish and chips, and giant Yorkshire pudding with sausages. I still don’t understand why it will take approximately an hour to prepare the food.
Positive point given to the restaurant other than its overall haunted atmosphere: the portions! Even though my mind was previously masked by the rage from waiting, I calmed down a little when I saw the food... OH MY the portions of the food were MASSIVE! XD How can we not try Yorkshire pudding in York? (oh this reminds me of James Herriot’s books so much!!) For the first time in my life, I tried the Yorkshire pudding. It's quite different from what I imagined how a "pudding" would be like. I was think of the Asian egg pudding: sweet and soft, more like a cream brulee. However, the English Pudding...it's not even a dessert... it's a main course! I was so surprised when I saw it-- more like pastry, or baked bread… crispy and with the aroma of cream. All of the dishes tasted pretty good. Yet, a wait for an hour… to be honest, not sure. The atmosphere is what's worth-coming for, not the food. |
Fourth stop: The Shambles Shambles Street is the oldest street in York. Around The Shambles was an area in the city which is covered by lovely streets full of exciting shops! We were all delighted to see the fudge shop, dessert shop, toy shop, and ice cream shop… all three of us exclaiming like mad little girls. That was the moment when I knew that I’ve came with the right group of people – friends that could share the amazement I experienced! How wonderful :) Oh btw, this street is kinda like how I imagined the Diagon alley would be like in Harry Potter.
Fifth stop: York Minster Don don don don...! There came the big moment of this trip—when we stood in front of the York Minster. It’s… awesome. You could try to describe the architecture using the adjectives such as beautiful, amazing, massive, and delicate … the York Minster was a combination of all. No, it’s beyond them… it’s… something too awesome that made all words seem weak. “…I am in love.” said my friend Emma, while the other friend Merry was clicking her Canon camera nonstop, trying to capture the gorgeous architecture from various angles. I temporarily lost my ability to speak, and just simply nodded to show how much I agreed with her. We spent a load of time taking pictures from both the inside and out. Due to the time (and money, the train ticket took a huge chuck off my budget for the day…) constrain, we didn’t enter the inner part of the Minster. It seemed worth well just admiring it from the entrance and the outside though. Still, I would love to take a look inside if there’s a chance….. (Money money money… gimme money…!)
Sixth stop: National Railway Museum Then we ran all the way back to the railway station – to hopefully get into the national railway museum before it closes… and we made it! The railway museum is free of charge, and closes at 6. We arrived there at around 5:30… Half an hour doesn’t sound much, but it was enough for us to wander around in the main exhibition halls. The guy at the reception desk kindly gave us a quick introduction to the museum and told us where would be closed the earliest. To someone like me who doesn’t really know much about trains, it was still a nice museum … full of, obviously, cool-looking trains! I still felt attached to this old-fashion public transit because of movies and novels though. Ah the Hogwarts Express (THEY ACTUALLY GOT ONE IN THERE!!)… Oriental Express… Polar Express… haha. It also reminded me of Thomas the Train… which was actually there, I don’t have a photo with me though… we were in such a rush… |
On our way back to Nottingham… it was quite unlucky (or lucky in a sense…?) that some drunk people after us got into the same train and started singing… and singing… and singing… for a very, very long time… with very, very loud voices. Risking my personal safety, I recorded them down secretly with my iPhone. Lol. Cheers. XD Cheers. |

Side note: According to a friend who went there before, we missed a famous attraction: Betty’s Café. It’s one of the most authentic British cafés, and York is the only place it’s located in. ARRRRGAHHHHHHH! Side note 2: DON’T BUY postcards from the York Castle Museum. To fulfill my promise to my dear friends/ family, I collect postcards at all possible locations. I bought 2 postcards in the York Castle Museum, each costing 50p… They were kinda expensive, but still acceptable. …I nearly cough out blood when I saw the same postcard selling in Shambles for 25 p only though. The worst is yet to come… there’s another stand that was selling postcards for 12p each only!!! O口Q (Fortunately, it doesn’t have the ones I bought… ;D;) So look carefully…don’t get them too fast… [Note: If you are planning to go to York, give it two or three days. There are actually a lot to see in the city… we tried our best to go to as many as possible, but I think we missed quite a few still. O口Q(幸運的是,沒有我之前買的那幾個樣子) 因此,仔細看阿……
