Life. Not too long after the relief of handing in my lab report, I got my horrible exam schedule… three days in a row, and my last exam is near the end of January. Why……! This tragic news has nothing to do with what’s coming up in this post…just have to type down my current feeling before I can extract out my memories back at Peak District… Erm, from almost a month ago! XDrz Even though we said that we went to “Peak District”, the group actually only visited two places in the whole place… so it’s not a complete overview of the area. XD However, Bakewell and Chatsworth House are probably two of the most famous places in that area. At the end of my at Peak District, I thought to myself, ah…this trip is quite easy to blog about… all I need to say is it’s beautiful, it’s beautiful, and IT’S BEAUTIFUL!! Done. This impression mostly came from Chatsworth House >///< | 人蔘。
“Brief introduction about Peak District The Peak District is thought to be the second most-visited national park in the world. In the heart of the Peak District lies Bakewell; the only town included in the Peak District National Park, and is well known for the local confection Bakewell Pudding. On the top of that, Home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, Chatsworth House is a living and working testament to how a major country house can become so much more than just a crumbling pile in which an aristocratic family live. It is quite rightly one of the most popular historic houses in the country which was also filmed in several well-known movies; Pride and Prejudice, The Dutchess, and The Wolfman. “ - Taken from the Travel Society Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/UONTS1112?ref=ts&fref=ts | 「關於山峰區簡介 山峰區被認為是世界上第二個最多人參觀的國家公園。 |
The day of travel started with an awfully dark and cold morning, the silence in between the travelers… misty air and the eerie sound of the wind… (when I went on the trip it was right before Halloween XD Point: it was a bloody cold day. Out first stop was at Bakewell, we got off in front of a Farmer’s Market that’s outside in the cold… The Farmer’s Market was great, filled with delicious-looking homemade desserts, cheese, honey… fresh vegetables and fruits, and some interesting clocks that can tell you the date of the year for the next 100 years! Yet I felt certain that I would freeze to death if we stayed in the outside for too long… |
Looking at the recommended attractions from the Travel Society, we left the exciting Farmer’s Market and went hunting for Bakewell’s famous “Bakewell Pudding”! Something that’s warm and sweet was just what I needed! I thought the town’s name derived from “bake well” (which is not. It actually derived from ‘Beadeca’s Well’), so I had a high expectation for their famous bakery products, Bakewell Pudding and Bakewell Tart. … [Warning] below might contain negative review on the desserts… but they are personal. :P |
It didn’t take us long to find the famous shop, “The Old Original Bakewell Pudding”, in the small town. Finding the Bakewell Tart was a bit more confusing, since many shops claim themselves offering tarts made with the original recipe… we just picked one that was the closest. XD In “The Old Original Bakewell Pudding” shop, each pudding is 1.95 pounds. The three of us looked at the pudding, which was described by Emma later as “ignominious”… and decided to just share it. We could always get more if it’s amazing, right? Turned out that............ ……none of us could comment on it immediately. We all chewed silently, and wish someone else would say something first. … I guess the first thing that popped in my mind after I took the bite was: …that’s all? We burst out laughing after the awkward silence, and started commenting on it honestly (lol). Not only does it look like a tart, it tasted like one, too. The jam was a bit too sweet, the pastry not too crispy… overall it’s alright, but just not very special. I have to admit that I was expecting something more exciting. |
Slightly disappointed, we went to another store to try the Bakewell tart. The tart is 60 pence each. It looks a bit more appetizing than Bakewell pudding… But still, it didn’t taste like a tart at all! It’s more like a bun, or other pastry. It might even be closer to a biscuit than a tart. Not impressive either. |
Personally, I think they are overrated. At least I tried, time to check them off from the to-do list in Bakewell! Another attraction in Bakewell is All Saints Church, which is a Grade I listed church founded in 920. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Saints_Church,_Bakewell It didn’t leave me a strong impression though. Saxon stonework and stone coffins are kinda cool… but I guess I was not professional enough to see their beauty. The art and craft fair around the corner left me with more delight… |
After then, we headed toward the highlight of the day: Chatsworth House and Garden! Chatsworth House Chatsworth House was used in three films before: The Wolfman (2010), The Duchess (2008), and Pride and Prejudice (2005). The Chatsworth House represented Pemberley, Mr. Darcy’s home in the movie. <3 To be honest I haven’t actually watched any of the movies yet, but after visiting it… it does, at least based on what I remember from the novel, it seems to be how Pemberley feels like in Pride and Prejudice. :) This gorgeous house and garden has been the property of the past Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. Apparently the Duke and Duchess actually live there… a very strange idea to me to have tourists coming into your house and taking pictures around. |
Special something at the time that we went was that there was an event matching the theme for Halloween: find the 13 pumpkins in the house. Challenge accepted! We actually missed one :( But since you can't go backward, we had to just let it be. The activity also helped us to see the significant pieces in the house, in a sense that we knew what to look for in the rooms even with no audio guide (or guide of any sort). |
What also left me strong impressions were probably the painted violin (See Postcard), the painted hall, the statue room, the library, and the dining hall where Princess Victoria has her 13 birthday party. |
Despite the extraordinary beauty of this mansion, lunch available here was nothing special yet quite expensive. Bringing a sandwich along with you might be a good idea :) The only thing positive about buying food there is that it’s hot. Exchanging a few pounds with a warm stomach? Alright I guess… (will bring sandwich next time :P) This is our lunch: turkey, ham, and chestnut pie for 9.5 pounds.
Ohh the garden tour was great (and it’s to join the tour free). If I was just to look at the garden myself, I wouldn’t be able to learn so much about this place, and would probably miss a lot of the places. One general impression I have left is that, it seemed like the 6th duke renovated many garden sites haha. We purposefully got ourselves got in the maze in the garden afterward… which was pretty fun haha. The four of us went in there starting with a different path each—turned out that three of us were completely lost, but the fourth one just got to the end by going straight! XD A bit of a disappointment for her, but we still managed to have the strayed feeling a bit in attempt to find the centre of the maze. Quite a lovely experience for me actually, getting lost with the others… acceptable level of panic or frustration… plus the pure joy of solving the problem together! Awesomeness. |
Locations other than the maze that left a strong impression still until now were the Cascade, the Willow fountain, the Cottage garden, a beautiful mirror-lake, and of course, the fountain right in front of Chatsworth house! Another interesting thing about Chatsworth is its green house that produces head-size gigantic lemons… hmm okay. Side note, we saw people having wedding on that day! Quite a nice place to hold it. |
Not sure how to end this blog post right now... …Oh, happy birthday to me! Haha. One of my three wishes is clear: happiness to me, and to everyone I love! Older in age, but my heart will stay young ahaha! |
