A sleepless night … so here I am, productively typing up my travel diary in Oxford, The City of Dreaming Spires. Why not Peak District or Birmingham? …… Good question, I can’t answer that myself. Just feel like Oxford more… XD |
A brief intro about Oxford: “Oxford is famous over the world for its University and place in history. For over 800 years, it has been a home to royalty and scholars, and since the 9th century an established town, although people are known to have lived in the area for thousands of years” (Travel Soc guide). This is our third trip travelling with the Nottingham University Travel Society (Brighton, Peak District, and this). The ticket price is usually quite nice—only cost us 12 pounds to go there by coach, and the pick-up location is right at the bus stop of our residences… couldn’t expect anything better! Except that, we didn’t spend our whole day in Oxford but had to go to Bicester Village if we were travelling with the society coach… Bicester Village—a shopping outlet… Ugh…okay, it will be interesting to take a look of a British outlet I guess? ...But... to be honest, our trip in Oxford wasn’t the most efficient one… we were stuck in Bicester Village for a longggg time… I didn’t even have the chance to go to the famous library in Oxford, which was where I dreamed to visit before this trip…! T_T |
Still, Oxford left me with a beautiful and scholarly impression. Instead of following our original plan of heading straight to the Christ Church, we wandered around the streets in the morning. One was because we were (at least I was) hungry, the other was because one of the main attractions, Chris Church Dining Hall, wouldn’t open until 2:30 in the afternoon… Missing it would be similar to never visited Christ Church, so we might as well come back again in the afternoon. |
I took this picture in the morning, but when we left in the afternoon he was still there, at the same position doing the same trick (playing violin while walking on the string... a quite intense sight) . So amazing! | He just floated... like that...
The streets in Oxford were beautiful. Street performances as well as the small shopping booths filled this historical town with liveliness… it was really a pleasure to wander around here. : ) We were lucky to have an amazing guide during the trip in Oxford. He showed us around while telling us the stories about this town, Oxford, a place that is very conservative… supported the royals during the civil war… King Henry the VIII… etc (to be honest, I didn’t know there was a civil war in GB XD) before than XD). From our guide, we can also see how sweet and adorable people can be when they are in love. Other than learning his girlfriend’s home language, he also bought a cake for his girlfriend’s parents… and is planning to collect one gift at each place he visited! (Oh wait, was that supposed to be a surprise? Not like her parents will end up reading my blog anyways. :P) Good luck, I am sure they will love you! |
We planned to try the food in the café of University Church St. Mary the Virgin, but it was a very awkward time when we arrived… too late for breakfast, but too early for lunch. They didn’t have anything left for us at the point. So instead of wasting our time on waiting, we went back to the main street and just grabbed a panini… finishing the panini while walking made me feel like a local haha…totally blended in! Oxford is famous for its colleges and museums; yet, we didn’t really go to many.
Bodleian library was one of the places that I dreamed to go to…! According to our lovely guide, the library holds a copy of every single book published! I was so looking forward to it but… we didn’t go in at the end……As much as I would love to take the library tour, the time (0.5 ~ 1 hour) and the cost (4.5 pounds) stopped me from the visit. We had to make our way back to the couch at around 3, which meant that we would need to save our time for one of the most famous attraction site: Christ Church… Be there at 1:30 was our plan… Good bye Bodleian library and Sheldonian Theatre…! : ( The Museum of the History of Science is right next to the library and theatre, but … I … planned… to… save … them… for… next … time…. ha … ha…*heart bleeding* | 包德廉圖書館[註2]是我夢想去的地方之一!
Our first actual stop: the Ashmolean Museum! A gigantic museum (4 floors) that covers a really wide range of places and eras... and it’s free for admission! The only problem with the museum was that it was a bit confusing XD … the map wasn’t the greatest, for example, I was trying to find the Baroque Art but ended in the Russian Art session and had no clue how. XD Again, because of the time constraint it was quite a short visit (for such a large museum). I didn’t have the time to read much of the descriptions, and only went to the European Art: Renaissance, Early Italian, Russian Art, Music and Tapestry, Dutch, and quickly skimmed through Baroque... didn't have time for the German section :( At the end I went downstairs and grabbed a quick look of the statues... but it was really brief... need another visit! Another thing interesting about Ashmolean was that… yes, it seemed like you could take pictures in Ashmolean, but I still felt really awkward to have my camera out in a museum...
ONE OF MY DREAMS CAME TRUE AT THE MOMENT THAT I STEPPED INTO HOGWARTS. … well, I meant, Christ Church College. Still, Hogwarts committee members… if you are reading, I still don’t mind getting the acceptance letter now… (even if I am almost doubled the age for the regular Hogwarts freshmen … oh god… Background history of Christ Church College : it is the largest of the Oxford University colleges. The college was originally called Cardinal College, but after Wolset’s death Henry VIII took over the college and it was renamed Henry VIII’s College. In 1545 the dean of the college, “gave” the college and all its possession to the king. On the same day the Bishop of Oxford also “gave” the see of Osney to the crown. Henry then combined the see and the college in a unique establishment he called Christ Church. The church of St. Frideswide in one stroke became the chapel of Christ Church and the Cathedral of Oxford. I don’t normally type up the background histories of places because you can easily search them up online(and it's a pain to translate them XD), but here I just want to show how… and why I was really surprised. Based on the description, I couldn’t imagine what I would see. Sounds just like some larger ordinary church right? |
Then later people told me this is where the Harry Potter Dining Hall was inspired from. !!!!!!!! *MIND EXPLODED* In fact, after visiting the place myself, I think the making of Hogwarts might be inspired by the college’s decorations and structure as well! Let the pictures tell the story: | 一直到後來人們告訴我,這是「哈利·波特」宴會廳的靈感來源。 !!!!!!!
The Cathedral of Christ Church College.
This room reminded me of Professor Flitwick's classroom *Harry-Potter-Obsessed-Mode*

Then we went to Bicester Village… not much to say, really. Crazy shopping crowd in Bicester Village-- an outlet that offers branded (and only branded...) stores. To me it's the same as the one we go to in Seattle, but more expensive LOL. Anyways, long queues everywhere... items too pricey for students... we ended up hiding in a cafe for the rest of the afternoon. We stayed in a cafe called Villandry for ~2 hours to kill time before the couch arrived... XD Night view of Bicester was quite beautiful, probably a good place to go for Christmas :) | 然後我們就去了比斯特村…
Alright, I think I can go to sleep now... Good night! Sweet dreams to you all. :) |
