I really hate how I am so obsessed with exams-- I mean, I hate the exams with a passion, but trying to find the best studying strategy for the different kinds of exams just became an unfortunate habit throughout my life...Anyways, FINAL EXAMS OF MY FIRST EXCHANGE TERM ARE DONE!! (hopefully all passed as well!) ♪( ´▽ˋ) ... want to know how the final exams work in Nottingham University? Well, come in and have a look... [Warning: Biased view point.
So what you see up there is my exam schedule! Looking gorgeous isn't it? I know right? *going a bit insane* If you take a closer look, you will see that I had 3 exams in a row from the 16th~18th. XDrz To make myself feel better I told myself, well... at least I didn't have multiple exams on the same day... Observation of interesting elements: 1. Seat number o_o We never had seat numbers back home in UBC, it's first-come-first-serve. If you want to pick a good seat (e.g. closer to the center or the clock, depends) or sit with your friends, you have to be there earlier. I guess the reason they assign seats is to prevent people from cheating? Oh a funny thing that we realized as Exchange students is that... our seat is usually at the front LOL. I have 2 other Exchange friends who always have seat number 1, 2 for most of their exams as well... why? Still a mystery. 2. Sign in sheet You do sign-ins here. Instead of the TA/supervisor/professor going around checking names off (how we function back home), you have your individual sign-in sheet on the table when you take the exam, at your specific numbered seat of course. You sign it, and they collect all of them from the students' tables. Quite a smart way to get attendance eh? |
3. Fold the upper right-hand corner of your exam booklet ...So your identity can be safely protected! XD [Figure shown above] This is also quite interesting and cool to me. Nottingham univ does this for the submitted assignments as well! You submit your assignments with your information written at the top-right corner, and stick it. Fair game, me like. --- <Image source: Internet> | 3.
1. F***ing detailed multiple choice questions!!!Q口Q (In biology, or neurology) Probably different because they don’t allow any formula sheet or one-page reference note… details! The % of appearance or the length of a gene (measured in bp)... SERIOUSLY??! You could easily google them up !!!! AHHH what’s the point!! I really don't see the point of these pure memorization questions (ALRIGHT, especially when I DON'T know the answers, but STILL! *depressed*). 2. Mostly memorization? || Extra reading In general, it feels like there’s more memorization than understanding for biology/ neurology in Nottingham...even more than back in UBC. XD Level 3 and level 2 have some small diff though. Level 3 does require more understanding and comparison of various papers (more extra readings than what I have to do in UBC, but that’s only for level 3, not level 2) 3. Heavily weighted exams alsjdlakjshdlkjashdlk Exams here are SOOOOO HEAVILY weighted! I have 2 of them that are 100%, one 75%, and two 50%. If you fail your final exam, you are pretty much screwed for the course as well. Yet it’s much more pressured before taking the exams LOL… it actually didn’t feel that bad afterward or during it (well, can't really do much now anyways). Exams are still exams, they are the same as anywhere else. 4. Residence hall being NOISY AS HELL OK this is not about the exam but it's exam-related... Another thing that’s the same everywhere… residence people being loud during exam time -_- maybe because of psychological reason (ie needing more quietness during exam + stress) they seemed way louder =皿=# | 1.
------- Studying style? Well I should wait until my results are out... if I failed miserably then all the stuffs down there are bullshits.... oh well! We shall see. * Bio/ neurology : read, memorize. * Comp sci. : ... past exams. Pick only some subjects and grind them. Seriously. * For both: DO THE PAST EXAMS. You might say "What? Obviously", but from the UBC final exams you don't really get questions that are identical... the professors are very creative. *sad face* Here? THE QUESTIONS ARE SO SIMILAR!! If you can make sure that you prepare an outline for the main topics, you are likely set. No need to study the whole thing (painful past experience) unless they are going to be tested in the multiple choice questions -_-. |
