It has been two weeks since my last update, and according to my plan of travelling each weekend… yes, that means I have two more places to write on: Peak District and Birmingham. The later I will save until my trip there in December and write the two experiences of Birmingham down together (a perfect excuse. XD). But regardless of my travelling blog debts, there’s something else that I would like to write about now… British fairs and Bonfire night! |
I have never heard about Guy Fawkes Day* or Bonfire Night before last weekend, which is, the weekend before the big celebration (November 5th). The info from my friend explained my wonder about people in town and in my residence halls playing with fireworks for the past few days, and even more… it surprised me with the fact that there’s going to be a firework show on Monday! Should I go? (A coursework due on Friday that I haven’t started at that time, plus the lab on Thursday that I have been struggling for 2 weeks already, plus GRE preparation… but my first British fireworks!! Who should I go with? (… haha. *FYI: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guy_Fawkes_Night Study hard, and play harder they said! So there I was, fully bundled up with three other lovely friends who live in the same residence hall as me… walking toward the firework show! |
Okay this is the first photo on my blog that has faces... XD But I love these people and this photo so much... just have to put it up! See how much we were wearing? Welcome to the November weather in the UK (we over-prepared a little though)... |
The Bonfire celebration was held at the same location as the Goose Fair... which I am planning to just introduce here instead of making another blog post. XD So lovely gents and ladies, let’s go back to October before I continue with the Bonfire Night.
Goose fair wasn't only about goose. It is a fair that dates back more than 700 years, known as the oldest moving fair in England. The stands all have the authentic British feeling—one of the most popular snack there (at least one of the most seen one) is …mushy peas! It didn’t look appetizing to me at all on that day, so I just went on visiting the stands around… the giant marshmallows on the other hand looked so fascinating! I wasn’t really sure what I would see at a “fair” – probably just food stands, and maybe some toy/game stations—which were there! I didn’t know I will see so many “Playland” rides though! Overall, Goose fair is… more like a combination of carnival and street market?
Ok, back to Bonfire night. <3 Judging from the duration it takes for us to walk back last time (we recall it to be around 15~20 minutes), we think it’s probably manageable plan to walk there from our residence hall. It was, really was (even though we probably took a detour and walked for about 40 minutes XD), and we actually started to feel the festive atmosphere on our way there! Heaps and heaps of people were walking over from various directions. As soon as we hit the main road, we started seeing more people and heavier traffic. XD There were so many people around that we just naturally stopped finding the roads… Follow the crowd! Not very creative, but works all the time. (Oh, and follow the traffic as well. Another group of friends that we know were going to the fireworks were took taxi to get there (shame on them :P)... and as good friends, we thought about how we might be able to make fun of them if we see them stuck in the traffic. Haha, of course that didn’t happen…because they arrived earlier than us… |
The first thing that caught our attentions after we arrived to the site was not the beautiful night light of the fair, not the small fireworks people generated, but the BONFIRE! They had an ACTUAL BONFIRE!! Excitement arose as we saw the sky-high flame (ok I exaggerated it wasn’t that high, but that’s how it seemed in my mind… we were far away, so I imagined the actual bonfire to be gigantic XD) I remembered to buy and try the mushy peas this time… Umm, tasted the same way as you imagined it would be. |
Coincidence or fate? As soon as we reached the bonfire site, the firework started! It was as if the fireworks were waiting for us to arrive. J I tried taking some photos with my iPhone, but they all came out blurry and ugly… so I stopped, and enjoyed the beautiful scene with my eyes… The fireworks …… reminded me so much of the fireworks on Canada Day or BC Day. The fireworks that I watched with my family. “I wish my boyfriend was here,” said my friend Sema, “this is really nice.” She said that at the same time as me trying to fight my homesickness inside. Thanks to her, I directed my mind to another way of thinking… a more positive way. Ah, yes, wish you, you all, were here. |
I am glad that I went, even though I suffered a bit later in the week…still. |
