[A one-month trip to several cities in Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, and the UK] I love traveling. All the inconveniences were more tolerable than usual --because they were temporal lol. I also realized that life can actually be very simple. I love the traveling atmosphere: the strange feeling of "everything being different from my usual life"-- which I could feel when I was eating the local food, viewing and participating in the local custom. Traveled until my suitcase was full of both dirty and clean clothes (sorry Cindy, I have cleaned it though don't worry :P!), walked till I couldn't feel my feet anymore...so exhausted to a point that I could fall asleep sitting, yet my mind still thrilled! Completed a lot of promises and dreams, visited friends who are in Europe that I have been waiting to visit... Sema ♥ It was short but sweet reunion! Traveling actually made me live a healthier life: going to bed early, waking up early! Expect the lack of vegetable sometimes -- but this is the only way to experience the odd teary moment when a SUBWAY shop appeared. Then back home (hmm, residence hall now really gives me a sense of home!), something that I have been looking forward as well. Seeing the people that I love and have missed, and soon I will be back to my familiar daily routine. Ah! My own bed! My own bathroom! My beautiful mug and laptop! Life is goooood. [A general summary from my FB check-ins first: *click Read More* ] | 一口氣去了德國, 奧地利,捷克, 和英國幾個城市。

April 12th, 2013 Terrible incident happened today. In short, the two of us lost at least 1000 Euro in London, near King's Cross and St. Pancras Station. But we are safe. Wanting to take the train to York with the off-peak train ticket price, we started our day quite early (7:10am ish). While we were on our way to the train station, stranger A approaches us asking if we need any help. He kept following us even though we tried to ignore him. Then later, two more strangers (both males) appeared telling us they were polices in plain clothes. They showed us their police ID (which looked rather fake, but what can we do...?) and wanted to check our ID, then asked for our wallet because a lot of people were carrying drugs and fake money around. We refused to give them our wallets at first but they kept approaching, insisting to see ALL our money. We thought we were looking at them at all time when they were flipping through our bills and thought all the money was back in the bag. Pressed on time, we ran to the station and jumped on the train as soon as possible after they gave us our belongings back. Still, it felt too weird so we went to the York police station when we got there. It's until then that we realized how much money we lost. I still don't know what can be done at that kind of situation. Just want everyone to know that this kind of ridiculous case exists: something more "advance" than pickpocketing. No further result so far. Wish you all a safe journey if you are on one, and be careful still even if you are not. |
-------------------- In respond to the above, my friends were very caring and provided lots of info. -----------------------
Yet for our situation there were three males surrounding and blocking our way toward the train station, it was early in the morning and no one was around. Even if we suspect that they are fake police officers, we weren't sure whether refuse to follow their instructions or challenge them will be the best idea... will they become more aggressive? We didn't have the courage to take the risk. So these are for your information, not sure how useful they will be in reality though.

"There are rules governing stop and search powers by the police in England. While they have the power to stop and search you, you also have the right to certain measures. It's governed by sections 1-3 of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act. They are not allowed to just stop anyone at random - they need to have reasonable grounds (Section 1, PACE Act). You are also entitled to the following information when subjected to a stop and search: even if they are in plainclothes (or in uniform), they have to tell you their names, and the station that they are based at, they must explain purpose and grounds for search, they must explain that he will produce a record abt the search after it's done, and that you'll be given a record. This is set out in Section 2 - if he doesn't comply with all these, you can challenge his right to search. These are your rights for anyone who wants to know:- https://www.gov.uk/police-powers-to-stop-and-search-your-rights http://safe.met.police.uk/your_rights_including_stop_search/get_the_facts.html And the statute for those interested in reading details:- http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1984/60/contents Since before you're searched, the police officer MUST tell you the above things, I think (don't quote me on this, but this is what i'll personally do), I'll insist that he shows all of that to me, if he doesn't, I will not subject myself to it. Maybe even walk to the nearest building and talk to their security, or call the police, or just kick up a fuss on the street depending on how crowded the streets are (I guess if it's really crowded they can't possibly try anything funny). I'll even willingly volunteer to be taken to the police station." |
